In 2024 joined the Executive Office of the President’s United States Digital Service (USDS) to partner with Federal Agencies across the government to improve critical public services for working families, veterans, refugees, immigrants, students, children, small businesses and retirees.
I was accepted into this technology fellowship for my experience designing with users (not for them), building authentic relationships, prioritizing user goals and my lifelong design practice in research, service, interaction and product design systems.
At USDS, I deployed to the Centers for Disease Control (CDC) to apply my private sector healthcare experience (Abbott, Amgen, Cigna, Boston Scientific, GE Health, McKesson, Ontada, Practice Fusion, Varian, and Zeiss Meditec) in oncology, cardiology, ophthalmology, diabetes, and EHRs. My focus: modernizing the National Electronic Disease Surveillance Base System—an information system collecting epidemiological, laboratory, and clinical data from states, territories, local and tribal lands to track over 140 infectious diseases.
As Strategic Product Manager leading 2 government vendors, performing heuristic evaluation and connecting the team to users to better understand the system we were modernizing. I led the initiative to implement the United States Web Design System (USWDS) at an enterprise level, adapting it from its citizen-facing origins to support high-density data displays and advanced interactions required by public health professionals like Epidemiologists and Informaticists who need to efficiently interpret large data sets to effectively report disease to the CDC. As we understood workflows like Case Management we identified ways to improve providing the right data at the right time by focusing on workflow decision support and opportunities to train AI Agents on disease conditions.
At Ontada, McKesson’s Oncology Life Sciences division, I led and facilitated design critiques, workshops, and planning sessions for a remote team of 15 designers across all US time zones including India.
I managed and mentored a team of Visual Designers to create the ION Design System, unifying marketing and UX efforts. Established component contribution and tracking, streamlined the development process, and reduced onboarding DS requests by 80%. Consolidated three 3rd party libraries into one custom library. The design rigor and documentation of the design system inspired and informed the visual language of the new Ontada brand.
Oversaw the development of the Physicians Experience iOS mobile app, leveraging AI/ML, OCR, and NLP for Oncology use cases. Mentored and managed 2 UX designers from concept to launch, resulting in a 947.5% increase in total users and a 1084% increase in daily active users. IC’d medication ordering feature. Available on the App Store for iPhone, iPad and Watch.
Directed a team of 7 UX Designers to deliver a consumer-facing responsive web-based Patient Engagement Health Portal and Provider Admin Console for cancer patients, caregivers, and providers, aimed at increasing engagement. Collaborated with offshore teams to meet an accelerated timeline.
My tenure at Cooper gave me a “UX PHD” in goal-directed design methodology. I taught and applied it for over 100 companies, helping startups of 1 employee to the Fortune top 10. From consumer video to catastrophe management. Translating requirements and goals into personas, scenarios, experience attributes, architecture and interaction exploration, wireframes and functional prototypes. Designing products that benefit from a meaningful visual design language to research and corporate strategy-heavy service design projects. I have managed engagements that lasted a few days to over a year. Communicating the value of design thinking by delivering award-winning design for clients and projects as part of a design team to managing clients and the work, solo.
I entered the practice of UX design in 2001 as an in-house designer at Electronics For Imaging. I began streamlining their print driver – a software interface with the unique challenge of accommodating every possible publishing feature from every brand of device manufacturer. I brought an identity to their products that supported the brands promise of delivering benchmark quality and speed for professional digital imaging systems. I worked with hardware, software and product management in an engineering dominated environment to apply the value of design to their products, helping their users: graphic designers digitally produce and professionally print their work – transforming their pixels into ink.
While learning the intimate relationship between software and hardware, there was a serious need to hear the user’s voice – to understand their goals and tasks they needed to perform to ensure a learnable, productive and positive experience. Without understanding the user’s goals, the brand and everything it promised would be lost in a sea of hypothetical needs and uninformed features.
Design was just beginning to find a way into software development and the design process needed to begin before the software was built, not as a feature request or a bandage. To understand how, we need to learn how to integrate design into the development of technology. I want to be part of delivering on technologies promise for the future or at the very least the promise of a better day.
Design and Experience is in my DNA, with my first job as the Student Life Editor for Yearbook in High School.
